Eat Healthy at Livestock Shows

Traveling anywhere makes it hard to eat healthy.

Trying to eat healthy at livestock shows is thought to be next to impossible.

For one thing, the concession stand food is delicious. But full of empty calories.

Not to mention the expense.

Expenses can wreck a budget.

Calories from junk food day after day can wreck a healthy diet.

Some of my fondest memories of livestock showing was sharing a meal with family and friends at the barn.

It’s extremely important to have healthy options available to keep up energy and mood during the long day of showing.

Here are some tips to plan to eat healthy while enjoying time at a livestock show.

Precook meats and veggies

Keeping meats frozen could be a struggle.

Precook your meats and veggies ahead of time.

Then, pack them in zip lock bags and keep them cool in an icy cooler.

Burgers, stir fry, and tacos are just a few examples of pre-cooked meals to take to livestock shows.

Or, visit the local grocery store to purchase fresh meats for the grill.

Pack portable grill

Do you have a portable grill

If not, a portable grill would be a great investment to take to livestock shows for healthy grilling.

Grilling is just one way to cook or heat meats and veggies for a healthy meal, while busy at a livestock show.

Pre-Made Finger Foods

Finger foods are popular items to have on show day to grab and go.

Make your showman’s favorite sandwiches, such as Peanut Butter & Jelly.

Pack sandwiches individually into ziplock bags and store into cold cooler.

Other finger foods that work great on the go include are string cheese, jello jigglers, and whole grain crackers.

Eat Healthy

Whole fruits and veggies

Good calories must come from healthy fruit and vegetables.

What are your favorite fruits and veggies?

I love apples, oranges, and bananas.

For veggies – baby carrots, kale chips, and and pre-made salads are great options for easy storage in the cooler.

Don’t sacrifice the best calories and nutrients for convenience.

Fruit and vegetables can be convenience food, too.

Slow cooker

A warm healthy meal is definitely an option at livestock shows.

It can be a struggle on show day to find a healthy meal among all the ciaos.

But, not if you have your favorite slow cooker and a plan.

Keep in mind, a slow cooker will need to be plugged in. Pack extension cords and a generator if you have one.

Good planning can prevent a ruined meal as a result as a breaker blow out.

How to keep food safe

It’s important to be sure the meals you are preparing and eating are safe for everyone.

  1. Wash and sanitize your hands before preparing meals.
  2. Keep food at safe temperatures.
  3. Cook meats thoroughly to safe temperatures.
  4. Keep cold and pre-cooked foods cold in the cooler until ready to use.
  5. Set slow cooker on warm on show day if the meal is “come and go”.

I hope these tips will help with convenience, budget, and diet as you and your family enjoy time together at livestock shows.

What are some ways you eat healthy on the go?
